Mast Cell: An Important Part of the Immune System

 


The immune system comprises several cells that perform essential functions. The mast cells are one among these. Their origination has been done from the cells called pluripotent progenitors. They can be found in the bone marrow. Mast cells, as is explained by Kanury Rao, can be found throughout your body. One of the main things they do is to look after your body's physiological and pathophysiology functions. Other than this, they also help in adaptive immunity.

 

An Overview of the Functions of Mast Cells

 

You can understand that mast cells form an important part of your immune system. Taking this further, it can be said that these cells are responsible for certain essential physiological functions. Mr. Rao has said that these cells can eliminate parasites. In addition, they are responsible for the elimination of bacteria, vasodilation, as well as angiogenesis.

 

These are not the only functions of the mast cells. Immunologists have found that these cells can also regulate other types of cells. Cells such as endothelial, macrophages, fibroblasts, and T cells can be regulated by the mast cells. Along with cells, they can also regulate various tissues and organs. This is mainly because they have the ability to generate certain molecules and release them. These molecules are multi-potent just like heparin and histamine, says Kanury Venkata Subba Rao.

 

Coming to adaptive immunity, mast cells can help in attaining this as well. These cells can efficiently identify antigens that can cause harm to your body. Along with identifying them, the cells can also remove pathogens. For the making of antibacterial products, these cells can again be relied upon. These products can range from defensins to cathelicidins.
